The Periodic Table of Elements

I have always emphasized to my students that is very unnecessary to memorize the position of elements in the Periodic Table. In SPM Chemistry papers, questions about Periodic Table usually come with the information that students need to know about the element such as Proton Number and Nucleon Number. In fact for Paper 2, a sheet of Periodic Table of Elements will be provided to the students.

One important thing that I've kept reminding my students to get familiar with is the shape of Periodic Table. Here is the tips that might be helpful.

 Take note:
  • Group 3 until Group 12 are absent in Period 1, Period 2 and Period 3
  • Across the Periodic Table (from left to right), the elements are arranged according to increase of Proton Number
  • Period of an element is determined based on the number of its electron shells
  • Group of an element is determined based on the number of its valence electrons
